Arrecife

Arrecife is a city situated in the east of the island of Lanzarote and has been the capital since 1852 taking over from its predecessor Teguise. The city gives its name to the nearby international airport.

Arrecife first appeared on maps in the 15th century as a small fishing harbour and its maritime roots are still reflected by the old town. About half of the Islands population reside in Arrecife. The skyline is dominated by the tallest building on Lanzarote the Grand Hotel it is best described as a bustling friendly and unpretentious city.

Its name originates from the abundance of reefs and islets along the coast which form a magnificent sea front promenade. It is the principle commercial area on the island with its main street Castillo y Leon hosting a wide variety of shops and nearby cafes.

Above its port there are two great fortresses San Gabriel and San José in the past defending the town against the frequent attacks of pirates.

Another fortress the Castillo de San Gabriel of 15th century is located at a small island in front of the port and connected with Arrecife by a draw-bridge.

The town's Museum of Contemporary Art inside another castle the Castillo de San Juan (called as well Castillo del Hambre) shows several outstanding works of Cesar Manrique is among Arrecife's major attractions.

Alongside its modern hotel facilities Lanzarote's capital offers unique landscapes of volcanic origin. The lively city beaches of el Reducto El Charco and avenida León del Castillo house a buzzing nightlife and a culinary offer accompanied by well-known local wines.

In Arrecife you will find an array of shops selling all kind of goods: international brand names duty free goods and electronic.
The main shopping street is Calle León y Castillo locally know as Calle Real but interesting shops are found as well along the promenade on Calle José Antonio Fajardo and Canalejas.
