Guatiza
Situated some 20 minutes drive from Arrecife airport Guatiza is very well known for being the "Cactus" region of the island. The famous Jardin de Cactus can be found here which is one of the most popular attractions on the island and has strong links with Cesar Manrique who turned this disused quarry into a stunning garden displaying over 1400 species of Cacti.
Prickly Pear was introduced to the island from Mexico and cultivated in large plantations around the village of Guatiza. The cochineal is bred on it´s surface to harvest the very precious red dye known as Carmine from the larvae that was in strong demand by the cosmetics pharmacy and food industries.
Guatiza is located towards the North of the island where tourism is kept to a miminum although there are some great beaches nearby including Arrieta and Famara.
