Located in the heart of the island San Bartolomé has kept relatively untouched in his original appearance. Known to the inhabitants as Ajei which means 'small township' it is surrounded by fields where mainly potatoes and onions are grown.
The settling of the population in this site was due to the retreat of the people from coastal areas during the time of pirate attacks as they searched for more secure places. San Bartolomé
San Bartolomé (Spanish meaning Saint Bartholomew) is a village belonging to the Province of Las Palmas. It is situated in the east of the island of Lanzarote. San Bartolomé is located west of Arrecife on a main highway of LZ1 and south of Haíra. The main industry are southeast and the mountains are to the north and northwest.
