The village of Yaiza was founded by peasant farmers emigrating from Spain during the early years of colonisation of the islands and this is how it remains today. Many times throughout history, Yaiza was abandoned by its people fearing volcanic activity but over the years, the population has increased and is now a well-kept, thriving agricultural area.

By rights, this beautiful small town of some 3,500 inhabitants should be lying petrified under streams of lava. The self-same volcanoes that once threatened Yaiza with extinction now ensure economic survival bringing in thousands of visitors to this tranquil, traditional little town.

Yaiza is a tranquil and beautiful village in the south of Lanzarote that has won the prize for being the loveliest village in Spain not once, but twice.

Yaiza has remained untouched by the changes of modern life and tourism to Lanzarote and is well worth a visit for its conserved Canarian charm of plant-filled streets and squares. There are many quaint Canarian bars and restaurants in Yaiza as well as some interesting architecture in the form of houses and churches.

With it's pristinely-kept square, 17th century church, a few art galleries and wonderful trees and flowers, Yaiza remains more of a lightly pulsating area — which is lucky for anyone in search of the more authentic and traditional Lanzarote. Walk the streets, sit in the squares and take in the sounds and smells. Gaze at the volcanoes from the mountainside terraces towards the rear of the town. For authentic cuisine of the Canaries, Yaiza is home to arguably the best restaurant on the island.
